Business of Being Born

Birth = An empowering experience. That was the first time I ever heard anyone describe birth in that sense. I think this movie just put birth into perspective for me. Throughout my years of hearing stories of birth and being in labor, I always remember knowing that hospitals were the savor to all the pain that mothers go through. The birthing process was never a happy place to me just the before and after was. I heard something in the film that surprised me; it was a smack of reality a woman mentioned that… “When you aren’t exposed to something you just believe what you hear.” I have heard all the bad things of birth and all the good things that you get after birth but never the good things that you can get during birth as well. The best thing that I got from this film that I tend to forget a lot is that, there are always different sides to the story.
Being a student and watching this was so shocking that I think a mother with no knowledge who is about to have her child would be even more surprised than I was. All soon to be mothers and people who are interested in wanting to have a baby should watch this film and so extra research n their own to find out what method of birth they would like to chose from. Seeing the different form of birth was interesting, I liked to see how birth changed throughout history and all the pros and cons that the doctors learned. The two most important moments of the film to me was seeing the old births from the 20’s, I was so taken back by how woman were treated it reminded me of being tortured in the worst possible time for a mother about to give birth. The moment that stood out the most to me was seeing how many bad phases there were of birth. It was horrible so see all the deformed babies because of doctors testing different things on mothers like the x-rays. I just think that it could have been prevented with more testing before they tried it on the mothers.
Throughout the whole documentary I had so many feelings I was surprised when I hear statistics (In the us c-section raised from 4% to 23%), happy when woman were trying to educate themselves and be different, amazed when I saw birth in a hospital or at home, sorry for the woman who had to give birth in the past and inspired to share my new knowledge with people and pick my own path of birth in the future. I think that I will tell people this and anyone who has seen the film should tell people is that women control what they do and that they have the power to chose what they want to do, don’t underestimate what the body is made for. If everyone else can do natural birth, why not us?
Watching the documentary was amazing I learned a lot myself and what I can do I learned lot about my options and I learned a lot about the flaws in AWOB. Watching this changed my own perspective of birth, before this unit like most people I planned on going to the hospital and getting that epidural without a doubt but watching the video now changed everything I really want a midwife now and I want to have my baby in water. Never in a million years would have I even considered those. I think it just shows that with a little education you can gain a lot of perspective.
